I can’t help but feel some disgust and a bit of sympathy for people that obsess over their money and the things they can or can’t buy with it.

What scares me is the idea that someday in the future I might reread this and laugh at myself for being so naive as to think that money didn’t matter. I hope I never turn into one of those people.

If, during the recounting of your exciting tale, you get so bogged down in inscrutably boring details that to segue back to the actual story you have to use the phrase “and blah blah blah”: Your story sucks.

1) No pop. Period. The exception to this is that I am near death with thirst and there is no water (or beer). Going to the movies does not count as being near death with thirst.

2) No more microwave food. Warming up left-over spaghetti = yes. Warming up a hot pocket = no.

3) No cigarettes. I haven’t had any but there’s no reason for me to have any either.

4) I will eat a salad with every dinner consumed in the presence of my mother, if only to appease her.

5) There will be a limit of 12 items resting on the floor of my room at any one time. This includes the 8 pieces of furniture. Vertical stacking is permitted.

6) I am getting a new phone soon because mine is a piece of junk. This new phone will have calendar/planner/reminder software and I will use it. For everything.

7) I will tell the people I love that I love them more often than I currently tell the people I love that I love them.

8) If I ever catch myself sitting around thinking about how bored I am, I will go find some tool or device that is broken and fix it. In lue of anything broken, I will find something that works and make it work better. In lue of anything that works that could be made better, I’ll take something apart to better understand how it works and then make it work better. You can take the student out of engineering but you can’t take engineering out of the student.

9) I will not commit or agree to any activity that I don’t actually want to go to. This includes but is not limited to weddings, sporting events, and concerts.

10) I will not skip any classes this fall unless under threat of death or disownment.

I wonder if I’ll remember the significance of this entry in a year?
